Power
Use power actions to start, restart, or stop your VPS.
Where to find the actions
- Open the service page.
- Go to Information.
- Find the Service Actions section.
This area usually shows these buttons:
- Start
- Reboot
- Stop
- Shut Down
What each action does
| Action | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Starts the VPS when it is powered off. | Use it to power on a stopped VPS. |
| Reboot | Restarts the VPS. | Use it when the machine is still responding but needs a system restart. |
| Shut Down | Requests a normal operating system shutdown. | Use it when you want a safer shutdown that gives the operating system time to stop services and close processes properly. |
| Stop | Stops the VPS immediately. | Use it carefully, and preferably only when a normal shutdown does not work. In practice, this behaves like a forced power-off. |
Important precautions
- always prefer Shut Down before using Stop
- avoid interrupting the VPS during updates, writes, or critical routines
- after any power action, review the result in Task History
tip
Reboot and Shutdown are graceful actions. The hypervisor will try to send an ACPI or Qemu Agent signal to instruct the operational system to shutdown. If the Operational system does not supports it the task can fail and might require a STOP (Think on it like removing your desktop from the outlet).
When to contact support
Open a ticket if:
- the VPS does not start after Start
- Shut Down does not complete after repeated attempts
